Gallery of Compelling and Problematic Photos

The deadline for submission of all new digital photos is upon us!  Glenn Ewing, our photography coordinator reports that there have been an extraordinarily large number of photos that have been sent that are not useable.  The primary problems are:

  • Resolution set too low
  • Photos are too far underexposed (dark) or overexposed (light)
  • Eyes are closed or near closed
  • There is too little or too much space above the head and/or below the feet

Central processing helps to standardize the quality of photos--very important considering their promotional purpose--but require uniformity in the photos that arrive from the field in order for the processing to be accomplished and photos useable both for promotion by the Sponsorship Care Office and by the field on project sheets.

In order to somewhat relax the tolerances of distance from top of head to top of photo, and from the bottom of feet to bottom of photo, we have made one significant change to the Case History Photo Requirements.  Number 8 now reads.

The picture should be taken using 8 mega pixel resolution, JPEG encoded (format), using minimum compression.  [A630: “L” resolutions (8 MP, pp. 13 and 28) using “S” superfine (minimum) compression (pp. 13 and 29)].  There should be no date stamp.

Please note that this is a change in that we previously accepted photos of 5 mega pixels.

In order to assist you in taking the best photos possible, we have compiled a photo gallery of example photos that we consider both compelling and problem photos that illustrate composition, exposure or other problem.  This gallery is maintained on the SMP Help System website as a link from the Digital Photo Procedures page.

It is very important that all who take case history photos be aware of the requirements and properly trained to take the best photos possible.

Thank you!
